My reef tank- a taste of sps with zeovit, prodibio, vsv, n/p biopellets, nopox & reefresh

Tank specs & equipment on starting

48 x24x24 inch main tank 36x18x18 inch sump net approx 100 gal
2x 150w MH 20000k Eye + 2x 30w T8 actinic
Custom made chiller with external fridge compressor
Taiwan made skimmer (design similar to Jebo)
Taiwan made powerheads for return & internal circulation (2 pcs)
Kalkwasser for ca & alk maintenance
( supplemented with calcium chloride & sodium bicarb powder when needed)

The tank was set up in 2003 as a mixed reef tank with lps, softies & fishes. Some of the corals were transferred from a decom10-yr old 70 gal reef tank.

My 1st attempt with sps was in early 2004 when 3 colonies (2 brown & 1 green slimer) were acquired. One of the brown colony turned out to be a lovely purple valida which produced many frags. The following pics were taken with my old p&s Nikon Coolpix camera

FTS with the 3 sps placed at higher levels

During the next 1 yr the sps grew & required fragging to avoid being stung by other more aggressive neighbors

FTS after slightly more than a yr.

After 1 yr , more sps were introduced & it was necessary to provide additional supplements to cater for the increased ca & alk requirements. A simple diy CR was made to replace the kalkwasser drips. A unique feature of this CR setup was the use of cheaper coral gravels as media & generation of co2 from sugar & yeast. However additional weekly supplements of calcium chloride & sod bicarbonate were still required due to the inconsistency of co2 output. In addition the power heads for internal circulations were replaced by 2 Seio 1100 wavemakers & the return pump by an old Eheim 1260 pump in an effort to improve tank turnover.

FTS about 2 yrs after starting sps & just before using zeovit.

Zeovit started in early Feb 2006. Instead of using the recommended reactor, the zeolite stones were placed in 2 nettings inside 2 compartments of a large hang-on filter in the sump. Adjustment can be made on the filter pump to provide the appropriate flowrate through the filter. Shaking of the netting 2x daily released bacteria mulms (food for the corals). Some improvement in coloration & growth were noted after 1-2 months.

FTS after 3 mths into zeovit.

As more & more sps colonies & frags from Chuisui reefers were added to the tank there were not enough high spots for them under the 150w MH. Some of them have to be placed lower in dimmer areas. The 2x150w DE MH light was then replaced by 2x 250w DE fixture with BLV 14000k bulbs in June 2006.

FTS after MH upgraded to 2x250w

After a year with zeovit, I decided to check the potassium (K+) in the tank bearing in mind that a low K+ will result in color fading & TN issues in a zeo tank. K+ was measured low at 300 ppm & KCl was dosed to raise K+ to the NSW level of 380 ppm. Some mixed reactions were noted on the sps. Most acro staghorns showed better growth & more intense coloration but birdnests, milleporas & montiporas showed little growth, color lightening & reduced polyps extension. KCl if overdosed or dosed too fast has been reported to result in death of inverts & small fishes as well as bleaching in corals.

FTS after 1 yr of zeovit

The conditions of two birdnests ( 1 pink seriatopora hystrix & 1 yellow seriatopora coliendrum) & two millepora ( red & green) continued to deteriorate with the expulsion of zoox & showed a totally “dry” appearance with no polyps extension.

In March 2007 the MH was replaced by a diy T5 fixture comprising 8 tubes with individual parabolic reflectors. Due to insufficient clearance for tank maintenance it was decided to remove 1 tube from the outer edge resulting in only 7 tubes operational. Tube combination is 4 KZ Coralight, 2 ATI Blueplus & 1 KZ Fiji Purple.

The suspected overdose of KCl (?) & strong BLV lighting continued to affect weaker sps including some deepwater corals & caused zoox expulsion & pale coloration. Red macro algae started to develop on LR due mainly to the red spectrum of the Fiji Purple T5 & presence of bound PO4 . To speed up the export of PO4 laden bacteria the skimmer was replaced by an ATI Bubblemaster 200 in August 2007. Due to the growth of some large colonies of sps some dead spots provided idea place for the red algae & cyno. The Seio & Resun wavemakers were finally replaced by a Tunze Stream Kit T24 with 2x Stream 6101 & Multicontroller 7095 in order to improve flows & keep all detritus in suspension for eventual treatment by the skimmer.

Pic of the old skimmer , new ATI BM 200 skimmer( mesh wheel) & FTS (2 yrs into zeovit) taken with the new Tunze Streams in Jan 2008.

My present tank consists of 40% colonies (from LFS) & 60% frags exchanged with Chuisui reefers. Some sps did well under MH while some under T5. Generally T5 give a better overall viewing & growth becos of the broad light coverage but MH makes certain sps colors really standout if placed directly underneath.

The results of my 2 yrs trial on the full zeovit system are considered satisfactory. However the tank has yet to reach the level of ultra low nutrient as anticipated. Half of the sps are still having darker tissues due to the presence of thick zoox layers indicating that nutrient levels in the tank are still high. IMO the results could have been better if not for the following factors:-

1)Use of bags/nettings in a hang-on filter instead of a reactor to house the zeo stones.
2)Upgrading of skimmer & wavemakers only at the later stage.
3)Excessive or accelerated dosing of KCl to boost potassium level.
4)Lighting – MH BLV bulbs suspected from a bad batch & no. of T5 tubes should ideally be 8-9 for the size of the tank.
5)3-4 in sandbed in the tank will require more bacteria inoculation & over a longer period to remove remnant PO4.

Here are some FTS of my present tank

Wonderful tank..truly wonderful..
I like the color...I like the water clarity...and best of all. I like the clean˛ glass, even on the back of the tank. How do you maintain clean glass behind the tank ? Any secret weapon ?

Bravo bro Tailek..!
